Hurricane Gustav in 2002 was the first named subtropical cyclone from the current Atlantic tropical cyclone naming list. It was the seventh named storm and first hurricane of the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season, becoming the latest-forming first hurricane of the season since 1941. Gustav formed as a subtropical depression on September 8 off the east coast of the United States, which gradually strengthened. The storm initially had several circulations and a broad center, but it slowly transitioned into a tropical cyclone, a process completed by September 10. Soon thereafter, Gustav brushed the Outer Banks of North Carolina before curving to the northeast. It strengthened further, attaining hurricane status on September 11, and reaching peak winds of 100 mph (155 km/h). Gustav weakened before striking Nova Scotia early on September 12. Soon after, it was becoming an extratropical cyclone as it moved across Newfoundland, dissipating on September 15. Category 2 hurricane: peak winds of 100 mph (85 knots), lowest pressure 960 mb. September 8 – September 15, 2002. Landfalls: September 12 at 90 mph, 45.6°N 60.4°W; September 12 at 75 mph, 47.6°N 58.6°W. Accumulated cyclone energy: 3.6.
