1891 Atlantic hurricane season · 10 storms, 7 hurricanes, 1 major

Friday, July 3, 1891 · 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM

The 1891 Atlantic hurricane season featured the most devastating tropical cyclone to impact the French overseas territory of Martinique since the early 19th century. Overall, ten tropical storms formed, seven of which became hurricanes. Of those, one became a major hurricane. However, in the absence of modern satellite and other remote-sensing technologies, only storms that affected populated land areas or encountered ships at sea were recorded, so the actual total could be higher. Therefore, an undercount bias of zero to six tropical cyclones per year between 1851 and 1885 and zero to four per year between 1886 and 1910 has been estimated. The first system was initially observed on July 3 in the Bay of Campeche, while the tenth and final storm was last noted offshore Atlantic Canada on November 6. 10 storms, 7 hurricanes, 1 major hurricanes (Category 3+). Strongest: an unnamed storm (125 mph). Accumulated cyclone energy ≈ 116. Wiki link
