About
When Warner Bros Films was working on the 1989 film Batman and wanted a ‘superstar artist’ do to the music, the realization that the Joker’s clothing and cars were purple led them to asking Prince to provide songs for the project. Prince composed eleven songs for director Tim Burton. One of them was “200 Balloons”, a song that Burton rejected for the film and its soundtrack. Prince then created a mashup of sounds and dialogue from the film into a remix of that song, naming it “Batdance”. Warner Music president Gary LeMel decided to release the track as the album’s lead single, using it as a marketing tool for the film. “Batdance” became an international smash hit that summer, reaching the top five in several countries including #1 in the US and #2 in the UK.
