About
The lead single of its namesake album and Madonna’s first of several US chart-toppers, “Like A Virgin” hit #1 at the end of 1984, three months after one of her most iconic live performances, at the 1984 VMAs. “Like A Virgin” also topped the charts in Australia and Canada and was a top ten hit in France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. The song was not originally meant for a female performer. Its lyrics tackle the relationship woes of writer Billy Steinberg. He explained in depth to the Los Angeles Times: I was saying… that I may not really be a virgin—I’ve been battered romantically and emotionally like many people—but I’m starting a new relationship and it just feels so good, it’s healing all the wounds and making me feel like I’ve never done this before, because it’s so much deeper and more profound than anything I’ve ever felt.
