After four years of releasing droplet singles, Selena Gomez released “Lose You To Love Me,” a self-love anthem featuring melancholic lyrics about discovering her true self through the difficult process of losing a lover. The song is the lead single from her highly anticipated third studio album, Rare, and has been seemingly confirmed to be about her rocky relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. A music video was released alongside the song. The music video was shot completely on an iPhone for Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign; these words and the Apple logo can be seen in a promotional video posted by Apple. The cover art for the track and release date were shared by Selena on Twitter on October 18, 2019. More hype for the release of the song began to build when a credible insider on the music forum ATRL made a cryptic comment “2.2.22.23” on a popular discussion forum about Selena’s music. Many fans immediately pieced together the information and theorized that on either the 22nd or 23rd of October, “Lose You to Love Me” would be released with a music video and another single. As it turned out, Selena released her second single, “Look At Her Now,” the following day.
