About

“Right Here Waiting” was an international smash hit in the summer of 1989. It spent 3 weeks at #1 in the US (and six weeks atop the Adult Contemporary chart as well) and was certified platinum within four months. It also topped the charts in Australia & New Zealand, reached #2 in the UK and reached the top 5 in five more countries. Marx was inspired to write it while away from his wife touring for three straight months while she was in Africa on location for a film. He originally intended to keep the song between his wife and himself, but later changed his mind. “Right Here Waiting” is Marx’s third and final (as of 2024) chart-topper in the US. It was also Marx’s sixth top 5 hit in a row in the US, followed by “Angelia” which became his seventh and (as of 2024) his last single to reach the top 5. In 2018, Marx used “Right Here Waiting” to take a jab at President Donald Trump after he said in a press conference “I don’t see any reason why it would be” (that Russia that interfered in the US election), then backtracked the following day explaining he ‘misspoke’, and meant to say, “I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia”. Marx then mocked Trump by tweeting, “I misspoke. I meant to say I ‘wouldn’t’ be right here waiting for you.” The tweet has since gotten over 250,000 likes 70,000 retweets.
