“The First Time” was first recorded as a demo in 1986 and was intended for Surface’s self-titled debut album, but didn’t make the final tracklisting and it remained unreleased until 1991 when it was featured on the group’s third album “3 Deep.” The song topped the Billboard Hot 100, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts in the winter of 1991, making it Surface’s only number-one hit song to date.
