Herb Alpert was known as a trumpeter, but he sang lead vocal as well on this song, which came from asking Burt Bacharach whether he had an unrecorded song that Alpert might use. (It was Alpert’s habit of asking this of songwriters.) The song, which had convenient spots for instrumental solos in the bridge and fadeout, spent four weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in June 1968.
