About

“We Belong Together” is the second single from Mariah Carey’s notable 2005 comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi. “We Belong Together” was seen as a comeback single after a lack of #1 pop singles in the early 2000s, but “We Belong Together” was a major hit as it topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 14 weeks, which was the second-longest running #1 song in US chart history, behind Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” (16 weeks) at the time. The single hit #1 and achieved multi-platinum status in multiple countries, including 7x platinum in the US. “We Belong Together” won Grammy Awards in 2006 for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance after being nominated in eight categories, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It won an ASCAP Award for Song of the Year and the BMI Awards named it as the Number-one Billboard Song. Billboard listed the song on their list of The 500 Best Pop Songs and Rolling Stone ranked the song #5 on their list of The 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the 21st Century. The music video shows Mariah Carey preparing to marry an older man (played by Eric Roberts) before escaping with a younger man (played by Prison Break star Wentworth Miller). In a 2018 interview with People magazine Mariah said the following about “We Belong Together”: I still love it. It’s one of my favorite songs to perform. Some songs that I write I’m sitting alone writing the lyrics by myself and sometimes when you collaborate with others you can brainstorm and really work together for the end result. That was one of those songs. It really was a labor of love.
